The Spring Festi
val
The spring festival is the Chinese New Year.
It has been celebrated all over china since
ancient times on the first day of the first month
in Chinese lunar calendar. People begin to prepare
for it several days before the New Year. They
clean their houses up and buy decorations and many
kinds of good food. Every family prepares
something special. The celebration starts on New
Year's Eve, the last day of the lunar year. In the
daytime people stick pictures of the god of wealth
on their doors. Red paper characters like″福″ good
luck and soon. In the evening, every family holds
a feast. All the members of the family try to
return home for the gathering, no matter how
faraway they are. They sit together, eating
delicious food, talking about interesting things
and enjoying wonderful programs onTV. After the
big dinner people stay up till midnight to welcome
the New Year with firecrackers. On New Year's Day
people get up very early. They dress in new
clothes and say″Happy New Year″ to each other.
Over the next few days they are busy visiting
their relatives and friends. Children enjoy
visiting because they can get″Ya Sui″ money from
the elders, that's part of the reason, anyway.
Dragon dances, Yangko dances and other
performances are also parts of the celebrations
which last for15days. Debts are settled, conflicts
are compromised and everybody is happy. People
wish themselves good luck and hope each New Year
is better than the last.
