Day 4:US sailors leading the SKUD18 Race
SSCQD 2008-09-13 11:11:19 Sailing2008

The fourth game day of Paralympic Sailing competition was completed on 12 Spetember in Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center. Saturday will be the final day of the competition with medals to decide in each classes.

Paul Tingley of Canada lost his series lead of the 2.4mR on Day three, a lead he had held since day one of the Paralympics, but on Friday the feisty sailor regained lost ground, committed to the statement he made yesterday that it was still possible for him to win gold. “Tomorrow I am going to play it like any other race, or at least I hope to. I’ll sail fast and the chips will fall where they may,” Paul Tingley said. Qi Xufeng of China reached the 10th place overall after the yesterday’s races.

The US crew of Nick Scandone and Maureen McKinnon Tucker stormed home to a further two wins in the SKUD 18 on Friday, September 12, to march to an almost guaranteed gold medal."I'll believe we've won gold when I have it around my neck," said a happy but unsure Scandone on coming ashore Friday afternoon. "This campaign has taken teamwork; it takes two people to win," he said. Chinese crew Jia Hailiang/Yang Xiujuan’s 34 points mean they’ve been out of medals, but it’s been outstanding performance for these two sailors who start this event for more than one year.

Bruno Jourdren, Herve Larhant and Nicolas Vimont-Vicary of France stayed atop the Sonar fleet, but more challengers moved within striking distance by posting better scores in yesterday's three races. Only seven points separate the top five teams -- France, Australia, Germany, Greece and Norway, and anything can happen with up to two races being sailed Saturday, September 13, to determine who takes the podium after the sailors return to the Olympic Sailing Centre.
