The beer known to Western drinkers as Tsing-Tao (and much loved by fans of
Chinese food) is celebrated in its home town. The brewery opened in 1904 and a
first glimpse around town reveals why. This former German concession now sports
a bizarre mixture of German design and Chinese cult
ure, complete with wrought
iron balconies, grand facades, European gardens and, of course, dragons.
Tsing-Tao is the ancient name of the town. The taste of a beer appreciated
all over the world comes from the purity of the Laoshan spring water, rising
just east of Qingdao. Events for the beer festival are fairly trade-orientated,
with industry demonstrations and the like, but there's no reason why aficionados
can't sneak into the brewery and sample the goods if they're in the area.

| Description : |
During Summer, Number 1 Beach is a riot of activity
(though check the current nature of the water before you go swimming).
Numbers 2, 3 and (illogically) 6 Beaches are quieter. Qingdao's parks are
thought to be some of the best in China, so in other words a visit to this
town can be as relaxing as you'll find anywhere in the country. |
