Secretary of the Municipal Party Committee Du Shicheng stressed at a tree planting mobilization conference that to make Qingdao be prepared for the Green Olympics and building up a well-off society in an all round way; Qingdao must do a good job on forestation, improving the c ity's environment and improving people's living standards.

The tree planting festival falls on March 12. Du Shicheng said there's a must to do a good job on forestation to improve the city's environment and improve people's living standards. He said the efforts should be made on vegetation, forest net for farmlands, protection forests for urban districts, green lands in urban districts and street trees. Jiao zhou, jiao nan, laixi, jimo, pingdu should take the lead to establish the urban protection forest, Lao shan, Fushan, Zhu shan, Xuejia Dao and Hongdao should be examples as a breath of fresh air to the city.

It is said that in 2002, the city's urban districts have planted some 1.99 million trees newly built more than 60 sections of green lands. The green land per capita reached 10 square meters. The forestation target for year 2003 is to plant 1.5 million trees and increase 175 hectares of public green land and the green proportion to hit 39%. Green area per capita will hit 11 square meters.
