Experts from the Chinese Taoist Association have called for the environmental principles revealed in the classic textbook Tao Te Ching to be considered in order to protect ecology in modern times, during a seminar held in Qingdao from June 12-13.

Tao Te Ching is a universal Taoist textbook written by the philosopher Lao Tze (571-471 BC), which espouses many philosophical ideas and teachings.

More than 200 high-level Taoist officials and scholars attend a seminar held at Laoshan Mountain of Qingdao from June 12-13 to discuss Taoism and its related ideas. Laoshan Mountain is considered the home of Taoism, and is rich in Taoist relics.

Ge Rongjin, a professor from the School of Chinese Classics, Renmin University of China said "It’s obvious that progress has been made in improving ecological environment by means of technology, forestation, law enforcement and automobile exhaust reduction." However, Ge urged more people not to neglect Lao Tze's philosophical thinking, saying that it offers an essential way to save ecological environment. For example, Lao Tze warns people not to breach the natural rule of universe.

Liu Zhongyu, a professor from the Department of Philosophy of East China Normal University echoed Ge's idea, and emphasized that frugality is one of important precepts in Tao Te Ching.

"Taoist ideas are not opposed to the exploitation of natural resources but it is important to restrain desires," Liu told the conference.
