The Sailor's Club on the Hubei Road, Qingdao, Shandong province, is undergoing restoration and will join a series of old buildings, which were restored to their past glory, according to the qingdaonews.com on May 25.
The Sailor's Club, located at the intersection of Zhongshan Road and Hubei Road, represents German-style historic architectural style. Built in 1901, the 114-year-old building has the city's first auditorium inside. It was first used as an entertainment venue for German soldiers and sailors. After 1914, it was used by the Japanese and following that, it functioned as the US Navy Club.
It was last renovated 25 years ago. The current refurbishment will get rid of the potential hazards by consolidating the supporting structures, which suffered deformation and displacement.
The construction will restore the old look of the building, said a constructor at the site. The original building had a towering pinnacle, which was destroyed in the past. The previous reconstruction did not follow the original architectural style, so the roof looks flatter now, the constructor added. However, the current construction will build it into its original look.
