Oil drain tanker catches fire in Qingdao

¡¡¡¡Firemen try to get into the bottom of the boat, the living area of the crew, to evacuate the burning oil drain tanker in Qingdao city, in east China`s Shandong Province on Wednesday, February 28, 2007.

¡¡¡¡A 500-ton oil drain tanker docked at a harbo
r in the coastal city of Qingdao caught fire on Thursday morning with no fatalities reported.

¡¡¡¡As soon as the emergency was detected, two fire trucks rushed to the site. After an arduous fight lasting half an hour, the fire was finally under control. The beds and beddings of the ship`s crew were damaged, as well as a television set and DVD player.

¡¡¡¡The local Peninsula Metropolitan News reported the fire started at the bottom of the boat, which is the living area of the crew. The local maritime affairs department is currently investigating the exact cause of the accident.

¡¡¡¡Witnesses said it was fortunate the ship wasn`t loaded with oil. Otherwise, it could have led to much more awful aftermath.
