¡¡¡¡BEIJING, Aug. 8 (Xinhuanet) -- China expressed Friday strong indignation
and resolute opposition to a proposal by a small number of countries for
so-called "Taiwan representation in the United Nations".
¡¡
¡¡On Aug. 6, Gambia and a few other countries wrote to the UN Secretary
General, requesting that the question of representation of Taiwan in the United
Nations be discussed by the 58th session of the General Assembly of the United
Nations."China is vehemently indignant at the proposal and determinedly opposes
Gambia and other countries' interference in China's internal affairs and the
violation of Chinese sovereignty and territorial integrity," Chinese Foreign
Ministry spokesman KongQuan said.
¡¡¡¡Since 1993, the General Committees of each session of the UN General
Assembly had refused for ten consecutive years to include the so-called question
of Taiwan's participation in the United Nations on their agenda, Kong said.
¡¡¡¡"That shows the international community shares a consensus on this issue,"
he said.
¡¡¡¡Firstly, the consensus is that there is only one China in the world.
Taiwan, as part of China, has no qualification, in any name or any form, to join
the United Nations which is composed of sovereign countries, the spokesman said.
¡¡¡¡Secondly, the 26th session of the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution
2758 in 1971, which resolved the issue of China's representation in the United
Nations in terms of politics, law and procedure once and for all, Kong said.
¡¡¡¡"The UN Charter and resolution must be respected and maintained," Kong
said, noting that the latest proposal is doomed to be rejected again.
¡¡¡¡"The 23 million Taiwan compatriots are our brothers and sisters, and the
reunification of the motherland and the revival of the Chinese nation is the
common aspiration of all Chinese people,"Kong said.
¡¡¡¡All Chinese people, including the compatriots in Taiwan, will never allow
any activities in the international society to separate the motherland by
forging "two Chinas" or "one China, one Taiwan", Kong said.
