The city government will carry out 6 key construction projects this year in order to meet the 2008 Olympic Games and accelerate the pace of building Qingdao into a regional central city.

The 6 key construction projects mainly cover road construction, housing construction, environm ental protection projects, the Olympic-related construction, small town construction and social benefit construction. In 2003, the city's road network consisting of 4 north-south expressways and 5 east-west expressways will be further improved. In order to solve the problem of housing with the demand exceeding the supply, the city government will make great efforts to develop the houses specially for those medium and low income people with 2 million sq. of houses under construction. The city will take the opportunity of striving to win the China People' Living Environment Award in order to improve the environmental and ecological constructions. The designing work of the Olympic-related projects is expected to be completed by the end of this year in addition to the projects of moving the Beihai Shipyard to the new location and reconstructing the bathing beaches. The social benefit project includes the constructions of the Jiaozhou Bay Bridge, the extension of Liuting Airport, the city subway network and the city Opera House.
