Overseas returnee master Liu Xiao in Qingdao: contracted for 800mu land for tree-planting and goose-raising
2017-03-30 15:44:42

Bachelor of landscape major of Beijing Forestry University, overseas returned master of UK Sheffield University, these labels seem a little bit hard to connect to Liu Xiao, who plant trees and cultivate geese in Liangjiatun village of Longquan street of Jimo of Qingdao. However, Liu as a man comes from Huangdao and walks onto his own entrepreneurship road – he contracted for 800mu land for tree planting and goose raising, aiming to establish Eco Complex with 10 years.

Walking into Liu’s farm, 2,300 geese will jump into your eyes. You can hear their noise from 100 meters away. This pro-1980s overseas returnee preferring to come back home to start business is not a sudden choice; he came back to this land with his dream.

Liu came back home in fall of 2014. He has seen over 10 sites including Huangdao and finally contracted for over 800mu land in Jimo and started to make plans: planting snow pine, red maple, and beech tree, raising geese without cages, feeding them with natural grass, and using geese waste as the fertilizer for the trees.

Liu lives on the farm all day. His bedroom and office are all turned from containers. He has wrapped the container with wool curtain in winter for keeping warm.

His wife is his classmate in his college life in Sheffield. She resigned from a college in Henan to come to the farm, now they do business and live in the simple container houses.

To save cost, Liu does all kinds of things by himself. He gets up at six every morning and goes to bed at seven every night. Besides three meals a day, the major work is visiting the farm. “In winter, 100,000 little trees need trimming. Gooses are not in the cage, so we need to collect goose eggs throughout the farm. The wore out steel stick need to be broken back…so much work to do.”

Work does not mean boredom to Liu; instead it is like a treasure-hunting journey. “Unintentionally dropped sunflower seeds in last year turned to a sunflower sea this year. The nature surprises me every day. Pouring the beer in the brewing bottle, fat beef toasted on the oven…in such as snowy day, so good” If you look at their WeChat moment posts, almost all topics are about the farm.

Interest is the best teacher, because the dream guides the life. In Liu’s plan, these 800mu land will be built into an eco complex in the future. There are snow pines, red maples, and free-walking chicken, ducks and gooses. Trees can generate fresh air to neighboring industrial zone; a small eco system built on the small forest can supply real original food, which helps the parents bring children to the nature.
