The Qingdao National Laboratory for the Marine Science and Technology, first in kind in China, will open in June, according to qingdaonews.com.
The marine science laboratory will engage in various research fields, such as marine and global climate change, sustainable utilization of marine resources, marine ecological environment protection and deep-sea detection.

The marine science laboratory covers an area of 640 mu (42.7 hectares) with an investment of 1.3 billion yuan ($210 million) in infrastructure construction. In addition, the provincial and city governments will make investments worth one billion yuan in scientific research within the next three years.
Scientists from 11 marine-related organizations, including the Ocean University of China and the Institute of Oceanology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, will be involved in the laboratory's research.
The laboratory has set up its first board on April 16, with Chen Yiyu as its president, who is currently the head of the National Natural Science Foundation.
