A 3D painting on the walls of the tunnel in the 2014 Qingdao International Horticultural Exposition Park, Qingdao city, Shandong province, was listed into the Guinness Book of World Records on Dec 23, as the largest one it had collected.
The whole tunnel is 111 meters long, 7.75 meters wide and 6.975 meters high with its internal surface amounting to 2,632 square meters, making the 3D painting at the Qingdao Expo the largest 3D painting in the world.
To paint the painting on the hyperbolic surface of the tunnel, several techniques such as mock-ups and 3D modeling were required, according to Wang Xiaofeng, director of the Art Institute of Qingdao Technological University, which was involved in the creation of the painting. He said that the stereoscopic painting applied perspective representations, aiming to create true-to-life 3D panoramic simulations for the visitors out of 2D surfaces.
