KABUL, April 1 -- Afghan police in an engagement with Taliban militants in Afghanistan's southern Helmand province eliminated three insurgents and captured another, provincial police chief Mohammad Hussain Andiwal said Tuesday.

The clash took place Monday when four insurgents in police uniform attacked a police van and police returned fire, killing three on the spot and arrested the forth one.

"It was Monday morning when four rebels camouflaged in police uniform opened fire on police team in Bushran area outside Helmand's provincial capital Lashkargah and police returned fire killing three on the spot," Andiwal told Xinhua.

He also added that the rebels' commander Mullah Naqib was injured and made captive by the policemen.

Naqib, a notorious Taliban commander, had twice escaped from government jail last year, according to locals.

However, Taliban militants have not made any comment.

More than 300 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in violent incidents in the country so far this year.
