JAKARTA, Oct. 10 -- A powerful quake with a magnitude of 6.0 struck Sumatera Island on Wednesday morning, but not potential for tsunami, Indonesian Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said.

The quake jolted at 07:19 a.m. Jakarta time (0019 GMT) with epicenter at 82 kilometers southwest Painan town of West Sumatra province and at 20 kilometers under sea bed, an official of the agency Andi Zulfikar told Xinhua.

The quake was felt at 3 to 4 MMI (modified mercalli intensity), a scale that is enable to crack buildings, at Padang city, at the capital of the province and at 2 to 3 MMI at Muko Muko town of nearby province of Bengkulu.

Twenty-three people were killed and thousands of buildings were destructed last month after a 7.9 richter scale quake, that was potential for causing tsunami, rocked Bengkulu province.

In 2004, over 170,000 people were dead in Aceh province in northern tip of the island after a tsunami triggered by a powerful quake devastated coastal areas of the province and others countries in southeast Asia.

Indonesia is laid at a vulnerable zone so called "the Pacific Ring of Fire" where two continental plates, stretching from the Western Hemisphere through Japan and Southeast Asia, meet, causing frequent volcanic movements.
