The Qingdao government has unveiled recently new urban environment protection standards, detailing a dozen environment protection indexes so as to strengthen and improve the protection work of this model environment-friendly city.

       The indexes are as follows:

       The investment in environment protection should account for 17% of Qingdao's GDP by the end of next year. There should be at least 316 days with air pollution index being under 100 every year. 96% of the water in water source regions should meet the related standards. 35% of the city should be covered with trees and grass. 65% of the urban area can have access to central heating. All the domestic garbage should be harmlessly treated.

       The local government has already assigned tasks and targets to related departments to make sure that all the goals can be met at the end of 2008.
