¡¡¡¡QINGDAO, China, May 26 (Xinhuanet) -- The latest scandal of troublesome
Chinese football Super League, triggered by sacking of the coach of defending
champions Shenzhen Jianlibao, had alerted Asian football chief who demanded a
quick solution from Chinese football authorities.
¡¡
¡¡"The crisis at Shenzhen must be solved urgently, or Chinese football would
collapse," Peter Velappan, general secretary of Asian Football Confederation
(AFC) said here Thursday, a day before AFC announcing the launch of series of
programs to boost football development in the region.
¡¡¡¡Coach Chi Shangbin of the Shenzhen club was sacked last Tuesdayfor poor
performance that led the defending champions languishing at the bottom of the
Super League standings with one win, four draws and five losses.
¡¡¡¡But Chi and Yang Saixin, the interim board chairman of the clubwho
announced resignation soon for protest of the sack, said the club had succumbed
to "ruffian" players who wanted to control the club and played the key role to
fire the coach that they did not favor.
¡¡¡¡Coach Chi took the post at the start of the season, but his relation with
key players soured over his tough management style, coming along with the salary
cuts that left many players in the club disgruntled.
¡¡¡¡Yang said the bad-behaving players, including the national teamcaptain Li
Weifeng, are more gangsters than players as they are multimillionaires, owning
companies and capable of fixing matches.
¡¡¡¡And Yang said he had held sufficient evidences that these "ruffian players"
took bribes, fixed match results, and engaged ingambling in last year's league
games.
¡¡¡¡The domestic media gave blanket coverage of the event and called it a start
of new crisis following last year's "black referee" scandal.
¡¡¡¡"I will talk to officials with China Football Association rightafter the
launch ceremony here," said Velappan who blamed poor administration of the Super
League for the crisis.
¡¡¡¡"Super League was a professional league and it must be run by
professionals, not some amateurs," he said. "China's football administration
needs great upgrading."
¡¡¡¡Velappan said in his meeting with CFA officials they will have to exam
China's super league from the perspective of a professional league, especially
in fields like club management, marketing, and media coverage.
¡¡¡¡"And we must bring the fans back to the stadium," said Velappan, adding
that many fans, dissatisfied with referee corruption, match-fixing, have turned
away from the super league.
¡¡¡¡As part of the Vision Asia program that AFC is going to launch Friday, city
league, a semi-professional football league, will officially start in two
Chinese cities - Qingdao in east China andWuhan in central China.
¡¡¡¡Velappan said the city league is more targeted for ordinary people and one
of their goals is to have full stadium for all the matches. Enditem
